ORIGIN: Zacapa was first distilled in 1976, when Licoreras de Guatemala decided to create a special rum for the centennial celebration of the village of Zacapa. Zacapa is produced from sugarcane grown on the volcanic plains of southwestern Guatemala, some 350 meters above sea level.

TASTE AND AROMA Sugarcane honey, derived from the first pressing of the sugarcane, is used as the base. This gives the rum a soft, rounded, and slightly sweet flavor. Zacapa is a blend of various rums, ranging in age from 6 to 25 years. These rums were matured according to the solera system in American whiskey barrels, Spanish sherry casks, and Pedro Ximénez casks. Zacapa is always matured in the thin mountain air at an altitude of 2,300 meters, in "The House Above The Clouds." The low temperature slows the maturation process, but the atmospheric pressure and the thin light stimulate the absorption of the wood's flavors. This slow maturation results in a rum with an exceptional aroma and a smooth taste.
