Description
ORIGIN The distillery that produces Ron Diplomático today has been in operation since 1959. However, until the early 21st century, it was largely owned by the beverage giant Seagram's. At the end of 2002, everything was put up for sale. It was purchased by Venezuelan entrepreneurs who expanded the company into the international brand we know today. The portrait on the label is that of Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, a rum collector who lived in the region in the late 19th century. In some countries, the Diplomático brand name was already patented, and the owners had to find a replacement. Botucal was the name of one of the plantations that grew the sugarcane and was chosen as an alternative. If you see a bottle of Botucal, it's the same as Diplomático.
TASTE AND AROMA Fruity with hints of cocoa, cinnamon, caramel and cloves.
The modern distillery is located at the foot of the Andes, near the sugarcane plantations, and has a natural water source. Production is highly varied, using various types of stills and both molasses and virgin cane honey. Maturation takes place primarily in used Scotch whisky and bourbon casks. Sherry casks (Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez) are also used for the Vintage and Ambassador.
