Description
ORIGIN Guyana has a rich rum tradition that began around 1640, when the Dutch established the first sugarcane plantations. Ten years later, the English introduced distillation. Things took off quickly after that, and by the early 1700s, there were already some 300 distilleries. In 1752, the first settlements emerged along the Demerara River, where the foundation for Demerara rum was ultimately laid. Different plantations each had their own specific still and were therefore given their own designation. In 1998, they joined forces and established Demerara Distillers Ltd. The distillery now boasts the largest collection of stills still in use, including antique wooden column and pot stills. El Dorado rum was launched in 1992.
TASTE AND AROMA The rums are blends based on molasses from various stills. Maturation in Guyana takes place in used oak barrels and is approximately twice as fast as in colder climates. The age indicated on the bottle is that of the youngest rum in the blend. In addition to the entry-level range, there is also a premium range, a high-end range, and a selection of single barrels, which can be identified by the various estates.
