The Ardennes, this ancient mountain range, a plateau of forests, meadows, and valleys, takes its name from a forest, Arduenna Silva. In 54 BC, Julius Caesar described this forest massif as the largest in all of Gaul, using the term "Arduenna Silva."
Arduo means "height" in Celtic, so Arduenna Silva would translate as "wooded heights".
