HERITAGE
Every great story begins with a time and place. For Mount Gay Rum, that's the Caribbean island of Barbados in
1703. The rum originally called "Kill-Devil" by the Barbadians, who were the first to distill it, is truly a product of the island. The abundance of molasses and the culinary creativity of the early settlers, as well as their legendary thirst for alcohol, led to this unique discovery in spirit production.

BARBADOS
Barbados is an island with warm, friendly people, a vibrant culture, and—important for rum production—a wealth of natural resources. "Barbados," which translates to "men with beards," was initially discovered by the Portuguese. The island was so named because of the lush, "bearded" trees that grow there in abundance. Later settlers found the rich soil and favorable rainy season ideal for growing sugarcane.

DISTILLING
For over three hundred years, the distinctive and vibrant character of Mount Gay rum was developed in traditional double copper stills. This process, an innovative distillation technique at the time, is still used by Mount Gay today.

RIPENING PROCESS
In the tropical climate of the Caribbean, the aging process is often unpredictable. A single year can be enough for a rum to develop the same mature profile as a three-year-old rum. Therefore, for Mount Gay, maturity is more important than age. Mount Gay rums are aged in charred white oak barrels that previously held bourbon.

SHIPPING
Sailing ships brought exotic merchandise from the colonies and introduced Europeans and Americans to Caribbean flavors. This period of maritime discovery is a crucial chapter in Mount Gay's history. For centuries, ships were the only way Barbadian sugar and Mount Gay rum could meet the global demand. Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, is one of the Caribbean's oldest seaports and also the port from which Mount Gay rum reached glasses around the world.

For the 1703 Old Cask Selection, Cellar Master Allen Smith selected the finest single- and double-distilled rums from Mount Gay's oldest reserves. 1703 is a striking combination of the rare and remarkable casks that Allen carefully preserved for one to several decades. Forty-four blends were required to achieve the subtle, perfectly balanced, and harmonious final result.
