Description
Gin SUL is a remarkable Hamburg gin with Portuguese roots.
This exquisite gin is distilled in very small batches—just 100 liters at a time—in a copper still in the rural village of Markdorf on Lake Constance. The master distillers deliberately opted for a slow distillation process to allow the flavors to develop gently yet intensely. During the vapor phase of distillation, the alcoholic mist drifts past a basket of delicious Portuguese botanicals such as lemons, coriander, juniper berries, rosemary, allspice, lavender, cinnamon, and rose petals, carrying the delicate flavors through the swan neck into the final gin.
The gin is then bottled by hand in the distinctive white clay bottle decorated with a screen-printed design. The unusual boat on the bottle is a reference to the typical Hamburg ferry boats of the 1950s, which were later scrapped due to their high cost and cumbersome nature. Some boats were subsequently sold to Portugal.
On the palate, you'll first taste the citrus flavors of lemons and oranges. The sweet, intense orange flavors are prominent, as the ripe oranges, picked from orchards in Costa Vincentia (Portugal), are as large as grapefruits. Then, you'll taste rosemary on the palate, and the finish reveals a tingle of juniper. The aromas are straight from Portugal: spicy notes of rosemary, cinnamon, and pimento, followed by hints of quinine, bitter orange, and rose petals.
